Titel: Carbohydrate field
Beitrag von: Ailis am Januar 05, 2006, 19:26
Hi,

I have been looking around for a while,
but can't really see if someone else has asked this.

In the main SIdiary BG-Grid window, is it possible
to remove the part of the form, below the readings,
where it asks for the Crabohydrate value?

I don't calculate the number of carbs I eat and this
field simply confuses me, as I mix it up with the bolus
field...

Any help would be appreciated, otherwise this might
be something that could be added to the wishlist for
future versions ;)

thanks

Hi Annika,

I think you can´t remove the Fields for carbs.
You can only invisible and visible the Aceton and Bloodpressure fields.

Oh, it shouldn't confuse you. It should remember you to insert your carb-values to get a really helpfull document :zwinker:

ok, was just hoping :)

No worries. I don't culculate them, never really heard of anyone doing that,
this site is the first I have heard, doc said that it is an out of date method
when I asked... but might be something to look into :)

with which method are you working?:kratz:
if you don't now how many carb's you eat, you don't now, how many insulin you need?  ???

doc said that it is an out of date method

WHAT? :haeh:

Sorry, but it sounds like you've an 'out-of-date'-doc.

This year the world diabetes kongress is in Cape Town, South Africa. I suggest your doc should go there to fresh up his knowledge base.

Hey,

well I'm looking into the matter.

I have been a diabetic for 12 years now and as I said never counted a carb in my life.
Ludwig, you ask how I know huw much insulin I take, well I guess I have worked out
how much I need for the average meal portion I eat and then adjust according to fat
or sugar content.

Thats what we were told since '94 with 4 different diabetes doctors...

Ya well, will see what I find out :)

Thanks again :)

Annika

It's a way to handle your bg, but it's definitely not the best way. Just have a look at the One Touch Ultra Smart meter and guess, why there's an option to enter the carb-values...

The best way to handle a bg is to make sure, that it's never over 140 mg/dl (8 mmol/l). And therefore you have to know how many gramm of carb is in your meal and how many insulin does it take to handle it.

It's not your fault, and I think nobody here would think so. It's the fault of doctors who never gave youa correct diabetic-education!

Hi,

I have to agree with Jörg. I was diabetic for 8 years before I found a doctor who helped me to normalise my blood sugar - using carb counting.

To me the carbs entry in SiDiary has become just as important as the actual bg tracking.
If I find abnormal levels after eating I make a note in the remarks field and try to understand certain trends that way.

Carb counting seems like a hassle initially but it becomes second nature very quickly.
The nutritions database in SiDiary is a great help to get you going.

You have to remember there are still a lot of doctors out there that are fairly unaware of diabetes, the doctor that diagnoses me 4 years ago - just rang on my mobile and said "yes you have diabetes - see you in two weeks for an appointment", I was also told just to inject 8 units of insulin for every meal - no mention of carbs, adjustments etc etc etc And I guess most of us have had similar experiences.

By watching your carbs and actually trying to keep them down (not a low carb diet) you can manage your insulin intake extremely effectively and increase your sensitivity to insulin, the more carbs - the more insulin etc.

I think if anyone have a doctor, that doesn't know how to manage carbs, than it's the best time to manage getting a new doc ;D

I am new to this forum and I am a type 2 diabetic, I have a diabetic review at my hospital every year with diabetic specialists I have been using Insulin for 15 years. This year I asked about Carbohydrates, I showed them SiDiary and they told me that using Carbs to work out your insulin was oudated thinking (or they did not understand it as I dont) my HBa1c is always about 5.9 to 6 so I have good control.

They're Fools! :tss:

For some kinds of therapy (like ICT or CSII) you have to know how many carbs do you take, because your bolus insulin-dose depends on it!

For other therapies like CT you should know how many carbs do you take; especially, if your beta-cells doesn't produce insulin anymore.
You can't take everyday the same dose of insulin if you you eat sometimes more, sometimes less carbs. As more carbs do you eat, as more insulin is necessary to cover it. (and keep your BG at normal levels)
